Shriners Hospitals for Children - Chicago is looking for a full-time RN to join our surgical services department. Weekdays only; no call. May function as a circulating or scrub nurse as assigned. Is an integral member of the Surgical Services team. Will perform specialized professional nursing duties in assisting surgeons in the operating room. Sets up operating room according to type of operation. Assists surgeon during operative procedures. Selects and prepares surgical equipment, instruments and supplies necessary for every surgical procedure assisting in. Performs related duties as required.
This position provides expert medical care during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of the patient's surgical experience. Will provide nursing care to patients within the Operating Room, utilizing special skills, knowledge and judgment in observing and reporting symptoms and condition of the patient. Provides, coordinates, delegates and evaluates care for the pediatric surgical patient. Performs efficiently in emergency patient situations following established protocols, informing appropriate persons and documenting events. Demonstrates applied knowledge base in areas of medical/surgical patient care, pain assessment, and actions of pharmaceuticals and anesthetic agents, laboratory values, and all emergency equipment. Performs documentation duties in the operating room and in the patient record, which is timely, accurate and concise.
The Surgical Services registered professional nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Shriners Hospitals for Children Professional Practice Model (FOCUSED), which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients.
The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects. Orthopedics experience preferred, operating room experience required.
Qualifications: Education: BSN Experience: 2 years in an acute care hospital. Experience in an operating room required with pediatrics and orthopedics highly preferred.
Certifications and Licensures: Illinois Nursing license. BLS, CPR and PALS required.
