As our most acute level of care, Kindred's transitional care hospitals offer the same critical care patients receive in a traditional hospital or intensive care unit , but for an extended recovery period. Our clinicians play a vital role in the recovery process for chronic, critically ill and medically complex patients.
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse and are characterized by duties requiring a detailed knowledge of surgical instruments and prescribed procedures to provide Surgeons the appropriate sterile surgical instruments and supplies throughout the course of surgery. Such duties are performed under the close supervision of Registered Nurses and Physicians who are immediately available to provide direction and control. Under general supervision, prepares, processes, and stores medical supplies and special technical equipment to facility departments.
Assist with scheduling surgical technician work hours. Clean all hospital equipment.
Clean and sterilize all hospital/surgical instrumentation including implants and loaner trays. Coordinate with the surgical vendors.
Maintains and coordinates inventory of all surgical supplies and instruments. Maintain event related sterility and maintain quality of sterile supplies.
Coordinate surgical scope cleaning and scope cleaning schedules. Assure working condition of all sterilizing equipment.
Coordinate technical services needed in the surgical department. Maintain all sterilizing logs.
Assure cleanliness and organization of Surgical and Sterile Processing Department. Maintains Surgical Tech set up (Pick cases).
Aide in bedside procedures. Keep current with recommended practices of sterilization.
Maintain and update all Surgeon preference cards. Maintain compliance with TJC/CMS/AORN/AIME standards in the Sterile Processing Department.
Provides expert knowledge in equipment and instrumentation needed for specific surgical specialties. Assists with staff competency regarding sterile processing, scope reprocessing and sterility techniques in the Surgical Department.
Maintain appropriate sterile fields by preparing instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for each surgical procedure. Ensure cleanliness of the surgical suite, and that appropriate equipment is available and functional.
During a variety of surgical procedures, handing sterile instruments and supplies to the surgeon while maintaining aseptic technique. Keeps tally of amounts of solution used to irrigate the surgical incision so that amount can be subtracted from total fluid to determine patient blood loss.
Correctly identifies blood, solutions, drugs, drainage tubes and appliances ordered for the patient by the surgeon or anesthetist. Verifies sponge and needle count with the circulating nurse before surgery, before closure and after closure to ensure that none were left inside the patient.
Before and after surgery may perform the following duties, including but not limited to: Sets up operating room prior to surgery by providing correct equipment, instruments, packs and supplies for the kind of procedure to be done; Assures that all monitoring and support equipment such as cardiac monitors scopes, breathing apparatus, etc., are set up and operable; Prepares patient for surgery by washing or shaving the operative area; Places patients in prescribed body positions to assure access to the operative area; Strips down operating room by washing walls, floors and equipment with antiseptic solution and disposing of waste and soiled supplies. Transports patients to recovery room or to and from wards.
Assist the RN in maintaining proper documentation of patient care record and report pertinent information. Provide care of patient as directed by the RN and provide input for nursing care plan in accordance with the surgical procedure.
Ensure maximum compliance with established aseptic procedures by members of the surgical team. Participate in and support performance improvement and risk management activities. Participate in unit committees for achievement of department goals.
Comply with established personal protective equipment requirements necessary for protection against exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids, chemical, disinfectants, radiation, asbestos, and other hazardous substances.
High School graduate or equivalent
Certified Surgical Technician (CST) required, Certified Registered Central Service Technician
3 or more years of acute care Surgical Technician experience required.
