The Hampton VA Medical Center is seeking a Registered Nurse for the Ambulatory Surgery Care Unit (ASCU)/Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). The ASCU/PACU RN will serve as a responsible member of the Surgical Team, leading by example, utilizing the I-CARE core values and abiding by the Nine Guiding Principles. Responsible for being proficient in the care of the surgical patient in both the pre- and post-operative phases of surgical nursing care in ASCU (Pre-op)/PACU and the Surgery Clinics. Nursing care to include: pre-operative assessments, administration of medications, obtaining pre-surgical ASCU and Pre-operative assessments, reviewing of consents and consults, patient and family teaching, skin antisepsis, and general holistic care and preparation for the surgical patient. On-call responsibilities in PACU and will utilize time at work performing patient care, accreditation readiness, process improvement activities and other duties related to the care and maintenance of the surgical department. Using data from initial screening to determine patient needs including discharge planning. Monitoring post-operative patients' levels of consciousness during recovery from anesthesia. Measuring and recording patients' vital signs. Closely observing patients for signs of side effects of anesthesia medication. Treating pain, nausea, and other post-operative symptoms of anesthesia. Updating charts, patient files, and medical records. Collaborating with the medical team on post-operative patient care and facilitating timely specialized interventions. Providing comfort and reassurance to distressed post-operative patients and concerned family members. Educating patients and their families on post-surgery care, as well as answering questions. Oriented to all nursing areas within the surgical department and will be assigned according to staffing.
