The Pediatric Heart Center at the University of MN surgical assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. The surgical assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate safe patient care. The surgical assistant performs these duties under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policies and appropriate laws and regulations.

Confirms special equipment/implants, etc. needed for procedure is available and ready
Reviews surgical consent and case schedule to confirm procedure and special needs
Assist in moving and position of patient
Place pneumatic tourniquet
Maintain integrity of sterile field
Drape patient per surgeons preferences
Provide retraction of tissue and organs for optimal visualization
Assist in maintaining hemostasis (direct pressure, use and application of appropriate surgical instruments, placement of ties, suture ligatures, application of chemical hemostatic agents or other measures as directed by the surgeon)
Use electrocautery (mono and bi-polar)
Clamp, ligate, and cut tissue per surgeons directive
Close wound layers (fascia, subcutaneous and skin) per surgeons directive
Insert drainage tubes per surgeons directive
Select and apply wound dressings
Assist with resuscitation of patient during cardiac arrest or other life-threatening events while in the Operating Room
Other duties or procedures as deemed necessary and as directed by the surgeon
