PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrates, through behavior, AdventHealth’s service standards
Assists the physician in performing endoscopic procedures performed on high acuity patients which may include but not limited to: Grade III Complex ERCP procedures, SPYGlass (cholangioscopy), complex endomucosal resection, Sphincter of Oddi manometry, pancreatic endotherapy (stenting), Ultrasound-guided interventions, Peroral endoscopic myotomy procedures, double balloon enteroscopies, endosuturing, Cystgastroscopy (irrigation and removal of necrotic tissue resulting from pancreatic pseudocyst), ESD (endoscopic submucosal dissection), Endoscopic Vac therapy, Overstitch (Endoscopic Suturing).
Assists with complex Pulmonary procedures including Navigation Bronchoscopies, and Endobronchial Ultrasound procedures.
Appropriately selects and operates the appropriate equipment and accessories for all Endoscopy cases that may include advanced procedures. Troubleshoots equipment issues as needed. Anticipates needs of physician during the procedure to assist with obtaining biopsies, stent placement, and obtaining images.
Demonstrates knowledge of procedure-specific lasers and selects appropriate laser fibers and supplies for the procedure. Adheres to all safety standards related to the use of the laser. Collaborates with the AdventHealth Laser Safety Officer to provide annual safety in-services for Endo staff.
Participates in national teaching conferences and live training courses with physicians and department team members. Host observers in the clinical setting to facilitate learning procedure techniques and processes. May assists physicians and facilitates learning in porcine labs.
Acts as preceptor or trainer for other technicians learning endoscopic procedures.
Participates in research projects and collaborates with research team to ensure supplies and equipment are available and protocols are followed appropriately. Participates in new product trials and ensures all team members are familiar with equipment and supplies.
Provides safe, clean, tested, and inspected items by performing the following decontamination functions accurately: follows manufacture instructions for use to reprocess scopes and equipment, operates automated endoscope reprocessors, and maintains all records relating to the monitoring and testing of the decontamination/disinfection/sterilization process. Applies knowledge and ability for appropriate care and handling of instruments and scopes by inspecting for cleanliness, damage, and proper function. Ensures leak testing and visualization is performed on all scopes. Maintains records on scope and instrumentation maintenance.
Participates in the preparation of the patient for procedures as directed by the RN. Exhibits the ability to participate in the care of all age groups potentially from Pediatric to Geriatric. Cooperates as part of the multidisciplinary team by communicating pertinent patient information to the RN and completing assignments. May assist in delivery of medications via endoscope under the direct supervision of the physician after performing medication verification with the RN.
Participates in practice changes because of performance improvement activities. Supports standards and initiatives set by the department.
Promotes a safe environment. Exhibits appropriate action in emergency situations, exhibits awareness and control of hazards which may endanger patients, visitors and/or employees, and identifies and reports environmental concerns to the management team. Ensures adherence to appropriate regulatory standards and Florida Hospital policies and procedures.
Follows standard of practice according to Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA)

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Highschool diploma or GED
One year experience as an endoscopy technician, or other comparable health care role
Experience in assisting GI physicians with complex advanced procedures in GI or Pulmonary such as (ERCP, Spyglass, Pancreatic endotherapy, EUS-guided biliary and pancreatic ductal interventions, Navigation bronchoscopy, EBUS)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
Previous clinical experience in an outpatient or inpatient endoscopy unit
Previous experience with instrumentation and endoscope reprocessing
Experience as a trainer or team leader in complex ERCP, EUS, and complex Pulmonary procedures
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:
Certified Surgical Technician, OR SGNA – GI Technical Specialist (GTS) associate program, OR SGNA – Advanced GI Technical Specialist (AGTS)Advanced Associate program
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION PREFERRED:
Central Processing Certification issued by the International Association for Healthcare Central Service and Materials Management (IAHCSMM) or the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)
Under supervision, the Endoscopy Technician is the primary assistant to the physician performing the procedure. They possess the knowledge and skills for assisting physicians for Endoscopy cases which may include advanced endoscopic procedures for patients with complex digestive health issues with minimal direction. The Endoscopy Technician participates with patient care in the Endoscopy procedure room by performance of technical and other delegated duties. Maintains, cares for, and disinfects/sterilize all scopes and equipment. The Endoscopy technician maintains the endoscopy equipment, transports the patient, assists in patient care delivery under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. The Endoscopy technician adheres to the AdventHealth Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable Local, State, Federal agencies, and accrediting bodies.
