Twin Cities Community Hospital, a 122-bed acute care hospital, has been caring for the communities of Northern San Luis Obispo County since 1977. The Physician Assistant Surgical First Assist (PAFA) assists the surgeon, under his/her supervision, during the procedure with retraction, skin suturing, tying, hemostasis and other first assistant skills according to AORN standards and practices. Responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Participates in providing quality care by supporting quality improvement initiatives. Has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. Has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is on constant watch for maintenance of the sterile field.
Have an identified, licensed Physician Supervisor(s) who is a member of the Medical Staff. As indicated, a similarly qualified physician(s) shall be identified for supervision in the absence of the primary Supervising Physician.
Be approved by the by the Interdisciplinary Practice Committee (IPC) chair, reviewed by the Medical Staff Executive Committee, and approved by the Governing Body prior to performing services at EMC and periodically thereafter.
Be subject to all applicable EMC policies and procedures and the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules and Regulations as appropriate.
EDUCATION / TRAINING / EXPERIENCE:
(1) Graduate of school of physician assisting.
(2) Basic computer skills
(3) 3 years scrub and circulate experience in an acute care facility
(4) Annual surgeon review required
(5) Current Professional Liability insurance
(6) Bachelor's Degree required
(1) Two-years recent acute care RN experience in the operating room.
(2) Master's degree preferred

Licensed by the state of California
AHA BLS-HCP, ACLS
