Vanderbilt Perioperative Physiology and Organ Protection lab (PROTECT)
Our collaborative research group is recruiting a staff scientist. We are a group of anesthesiologists and surgeons investigating mechanisms of and treatments for organ injury in patients having major surgery and pre-clinical models. A current focus is the study of oxidative damage from excess oxygen exposure and its effects on vascular reactivity and ischemia reperfusion injury. In the lab we manipulate oxygen levels and measure effects on physiology and organ injury. This has massive clinical implications because almost all surgical and ICU patients receive supplemental oxygen. We perform ex-vivo vascular studies, pre-clinical renal ischemia-reperfusion experiments, and clinical trials in patients having major surgery or admitted to the ICU. Initial responsibilities will be measuring endothelial-dependent and -independent vasorelaxation ex-vivo in arterioles harvested from mediastinal fat and mammary arteries taken during cardiac surgery; quantification of various analytes and biomarkers using traditional lab techniques, performance of mouse model of renal ischemia and reperfusion in the setting of hyperoxia (high oxygen) vs. normoxia (normal oxygen) and various adjuncts that agonize or antagonize mechanisms of interest; and lab management. The candidate must have experience. Our research is collaborative, innovative and translational, and funded by the NIH. There is plenty of room for creativity and conditional independence within a highly exciting and satisfying work environment.
Coordination among tasks will require excellent organization, prioritization, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills. In addition, due to clinical tasks and other responsibilities of the principal investigators this position requires experience and independence. As the primary scientist and lab manager in this lab, you will often not have others to provide expertise or assistance. You will perform under minimal supervision a wide variety of complex tasks requiring practical understanding of scientific techniques and advanced knowledge of scientific theory. This provides a lot of freedom for discovery and satisfaction.
