The VUMC CHTN Biorepository works closely with patients and medical teams to procure and obtain remnant biological specimens from autopsies and surgeries. The main function of the biorepository is to consent, procure and distribute biospecimens under NCI and ISBER Best Practices. Staff will be required to rotate through four operational areas every 6 months until they are fully trained. Candidates will be placed in one of four operational areas listed below based on their educational background, work history, and the immediate needs of the biorepository.

Key Responsibilities:
Area 1: Consent. Under the direction of the lab manager, the position will require staff to work closely with clinicians and surgeons to gain access to the patient for participation in research protocols. Staff will approach patients and explain the research study and obtain consent for the Donating Tissue for Research Protocol. The position requires staff to work with the perioperative nursing team to ensure biofluids are collected per investigator requests. Staff must complete, EPIC, CITI/IRB and human subjects training within the first 2 weeks of position.
Area 2: Procurement. Under the direction of the lab manager and lead procurement technician, the position will require staff to work closely with the surgical team and surgical pathology team to gain access to remnant tissue for research protocols. Staff will work closely with the consent team to ensure an appropriate collection of remnant solid tissue is obtained. Staff will process biospecimens per NCI/ISBER best practices and in a variety of preparation types. Staff must complete EPIC, CITI/IRB and human subjects training within the first 2 weeks of position.
Area 3: QAQC. Under the direction of the lab manager and lead QAQC technician, staff will extract data from the patient medical record, de-identify the data and enter it into the IT biorepository database. Staff will be required to enter data that reflects the physical and microscopic properties of the tissue, assign tissue to appropriate investigator projects and secondary check work performed by the consent and procurement staff. Staff will be required to complete error reporting and communicate with team members to ensure quality biospecimens are being procured. Staff must complete EPIC, CITI/IRB and human subjects training within the first 2 weeks of position.
Area 4: Shipping. Under the direction of the lab manager and lead technician, staff will communicate with investigators to schedule biospecimen shipments, delink biospecimens and prepare them for shipping in a variety of formats. Staff will be required to obtain IATA/DOT Biological specimen shipping certification. Staff must complete EPIC, CITI/IRB and human subjects training within the first 2 weeks of position. Staff will be required to complete competency testing in the handling of biospecimens (dry ice, fresh, FFPE, fixed, etc).

Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) and < 1 year experience

Frequent: Noise: May include exposure to occupational noise levels which equal or exceed an 8-hr time-weighted average of 85 decibels, requiring enrollment in VUMC's Hearing Conservation Program which includes training, use of hearing protection, and periodic audiometry.
