The RN is directly responsible to the Nurse Manager, Nursing Service for the completion of his/her assignment, the quality of care given, and the display of professional behavior. This RN is accountable to the Associate Director Nursing and Patient Care Services (ADPCS) for ensuring the Standards of Patient Care and Nursing Practice are upheld. This RN will work collaboratively with all levels of Nursing Service Leadership, personnel, and all services within the healthcare system. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. He/she must be able to assess and interpret data relating to the patient's current health status, which will facilitate the delivery of care appropriate to the age specific and population specific needs of the adult and geriatric patient. *The registered nurse practices within the Surgical Service and under the umbrella of Nursing and Patient Care Service providing pre/intra/post-operative care to both inpatient and outpatient adult and elderly Veterans undergoing local minor procedures and basic complexity ambulatory surgical procedures. The RN is responsible for assuring patient preparation for surgery and is directly accountable for the care of the patient in the Operating Room (OR). The RN is expected to function proficiently as the circulator within the OR and to be competent in all surgical specialties served. The RN maintains proficiency in the use of all surgical equipment as well as tissue and implant management. The RN assures the sterility of the surgical field is maintained and all the instrumentation in play is used in a safe and efficient manner. * The RN is responsible for reviewing patient records, assuring/assisting with completion of pre-procedural testing and preparation and pre/post procedural education. The RN is required to function within the Special Procedures area including the administration of conscious sedation or assisting providers during minor procedures. The RN is responsible for monitoring the post-procedural patient who has received IV conscious sedation or Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC). *The RN provides care in the ambulatory surgery area providing specialized and intensive direct care for patients in the perioperative/perianesthesia and procedural care continuum. The RN is responsible for reviewing patient care records, assuring/assisting with completion of preoperative testing and preparation, monitoring Phase I and Phase II patients who have received multi-spectrum anesthesia (general, spinal, regional, conscious sedation, and local), admission/transfer and postoperative/procedural discharge, and education. The patient population served includes all surgical specialties as well as patients undergoing endoscopic, cystoscopic, and/or sedation assisted procedures. *The RN may conduct a variety of clinics effectively including but not limited to Urology, General Surgery, Orthopedics and Podiatry using self-direction in problem solving and priority setting. Training to other areas of the surgery department will be determined by department needs at the manager's discretion. *The RN assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction, and acts as the patient's advocate.
