The Registered Nurse (RN) is accountable for providing a restorative healing experience for the patient and the patient's support systems in transformational partnership with the Clinical Manager and the interdisciplinary team. As an accountable professional, the Registered Nurse exercises autonomy (the right to undertake a specified action), authority (the power to implement action), and control (the ability to enforce the action in an ongoing and consistent manner) in order to ensure these excellent patient outcomes. Professional accountability is expressed in five areas: practice, quality assurance, competence, research, and resource management. RESPONSIBILITIES
Patient education - Orients patients recovering from anesthesia. Initiates post-op teaching. Teaches to the needs and abilities of the patients to alleviate fears, decrease anxiety and diminish pain.
Patient Care - Collaborates with appropriate health care team members, patient and family/significant others to ensure continuity of care throughout their perioperative event. Creates a safe environment and serves as patient advocate; evaluates, revises and documents the plan of care.
Patient Assessment - Performs a thorough and ongoing nursing assessment of patient and data specific to the surgery and anesthesia given. The nurse develops an individualized postoperative plan of care.
Treatment/Procedures - Performs all treatments and procedures in accordance with established policies, products and patient care standards.
Communication - Demonstrates the ability to process and interface appropriate information between the health care team and the patient, family/significant other to ensure quality patient outcomes. Presents a professional attitude and provides an atmosphere conducive to a secure, serene environment. Demonstrates knowledge in accessing necessary resources to achieve positive outcome.
Documentation - Accurately documents pertinent patient information, utilizing the nursing process, on all required forms, to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Cost Containment - Utilizes supplies and equipment appropriately and assists in maintaining appropriate inventory levels.
Planning - Transcribes and coordinates implementation of physician orders involving all hospital departments as needed.
Other duties - assumes other related duties as identified to promote improved patient care.
Performs any other duties as assigned.
Education:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, currently licensed in the State of New York, or permittee. Membership in a professional organization suggested.
Experience:
Basic knowledge of nursing theory and practice. Knowledge of appropriate technology and practice standards for area of responsibility. Demonstrates sound clinical skills; knowledge of Hospital structure, objectives and standards of practice, positive communication skills.
Training/License:
New York State Registered Nurse license required, or permittee. BLS; ACLS certificationwithin one year of employment. Med Surg. Certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
