This unit supports the care continuum for the post-surgical cardiac patient. Nurses provide specialized acute care in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. It is recognized as a Center of Excellence for left ventricular assist device implantation and management and care of the patient after heart transplantation surgery. Nurses in this environment possess strong critical thinking skills and are able to make autonomous decisions. Nurses also have the opportunity to be involved in the patient’s progress from the immediate post-op period through discharge. Nurses are exposed to technological advancements and an acute patient population on the Washington University Medical Campus. Nursing practices and leadership abilities are taken to the highest level possible.
