Galveston, TX - University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) seeks a dynamic and distinguished academic leader with a record of accomplishment in administration, clinical practice, research, and education to serve as its next Chair of Anesthesiology. The Chair will lead through innovation and a vision for advancing anesthesia services, scholarly activity, and enhancing the research and educational programs.
UTMB has been a committed presence in Texas for over a century and a quarter, with a mission encompassing several critical aspects of healthcare. Since its inception in 1891 as the nation's first public medical school and hospital under unified leadership, UTMB has consistently pioneered advancements in healthcare. What began as a single hospital and medical school building in Galveston has evolved into a globally influential academic health sciences center. Today, it is renowned for its groundbreaking research initiatives and has expanded into a comprehensive health system with hospitals across four campuses and a network of clinics.
The Department of Anesthesiology at UTMB consists of a unique learning community that provides state-of-the-art anesthetic care for patients, a strong learning community for residents and fellows, and research that blends basic and clinical scientists into strong teams that incorporate science into innovative patient care. There are more than 60 anesthesiologists and 35 staff members covering over 8 specialty areas. The Department prides itself in the foremost delivery of clinical care in the broadening field of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, which also incorporates acute and chronic pain medicine as well as intensive care medicine.
The candidate will be a board-certified anesthesiologist who brings a strong track record of leadership and mentoring faculty at all stages of career development along with a demonstrated understanding of sponsored research and desire to expand the research portfolio of the Department. Candidates must have the leadership experience required to oversee a busy clinical department in addition to integrity, intellect, the ability to work collaboratively with numerous stakeholders, and a vision of how a modern academic department of anesthesiology thrives in the changing landscape of health care.
Qualified candidates must hold an MD or equivalent medical degree; be board certified in Anesthesiology and eligible for medical licensure in Texas; and have academic credentials commensurate with appointment at the rank of professor at UTMB. Proven and substantial leadership experience is required, as is the ability to be a collaborative leader in a rapidly evolving model of care.
